Viz - IBM Cognos Analytics

In the last section we created the reports we specifically designed the DW to be able to answer with ease, in this section we’ll create a dashboard using IBM Cognos Analytics

Objectives

I’ll be working this section in the free trial of IBM Cognos Analytics to create a dashboard that contains:

  1. A line chart of total sales per month for the year 2020
  2. A pie chart of total sales for each category
  3. A bar chart of quarterly sales of mobile phones

Data

I’ll download the data from online to a local drive named: ecommerce.csv

Import Data into Cognos DW

  • Fairly simple process, in Cognos you have an option to Upload & Create or Create from Existing Data or Access Recent Work
  • Upload and Create is what we choose
  • Drag file over
  • Now you see the file listed on the screen

Convert Data into Data Module

  • Now we need to create a data module out of the data we wish to use
  • Main Menu > + New > Create Data Module
  • Next Screen shows the data file with all the columns listed
  • Click on file name: ecommerce.csv
  • With Grid Tab selected > You’ll see a grid/table showing all the data

List First 10 rows

Create DataSource

  • Create + > Dashboard
  • Choose layout of Dashboard
  • Next screen will show a blank dashboard with Selected Sources in the left pane
  • Click + to add a DataSource
  • Next window choose ecommerce.csv as the datasource

  • Now you see the selected source as shown below

Line Chart

  • Create a line chart of month wise total sales for the year 2020.
  • Choose line chart
  • Drag month to x
  • Drag price to y
  • Click on Filters, Drag Year to filter this tab only > choose 2020

Pie Chart

  • Create a pie chart of category wise total sales.

Bar Chart

  • Create a bar chart of Quarterly sales of mobile phones
